Sowing Sermons That Sprout by Carlos A. Zazueta
The lush, green slopes of Guatemala are busy with farmers who plow the land and sow their seed. Half of all working adults are farmers1 and many of these are also pastors, those who sow the seed of the Word of God. Because most pastors lack formal theological training, Insight for Living’s Spanish-language broadcast, Visión Para Vivir, has risen to play a significant role in the ministries of these hardworking bi-vocational pastors.
During a recent visit to Guatemala, I spoke to a gathering of pastors who were eager for answers to their many theological questions. They wanted to meet me, their radio-pastor, so that they might be trained to better shepherd their flocks. I’ll never forget one of these farmer-pastors who told me his story: “I listen to Visión Para Vivir while working our fields. In the evening at home, with my calloused hands, I write all that I remember you taught . . . this becomes my Sunday morning message to our congregation.” Isn’t that wonderful? Stories like this underscore the importance of our Bible teaching broadcast in a country so desperate for pastoral training. What a privilege to realize that the seed we sow in Guatemala is bearing a harvest that continues to multiply.
